Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the right to question certain rulings made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move follows just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
