Marketing retatrutide on social media or messaging apps is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unapproved drug that must not be marketed or supplied for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some influencers attempt to sidestep the regulations by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled substance, but promotion and distribution can still violate pharmaceutical, marketing, and consumer regulations, risking penalties, legal action or imprisonment.

Research also found communities with up to nine thousand participants marketing retatrutide using Telegram's built-in discovery tool, which operates like a online catalog. Entering “retatrutide” immediately brings up channels with thousands of users, filled with images of slimming results, glowing reviews and detailed guides for mixing or administering at home.

After minutes of entering one group, a seller posted contact information, where the majority of transactions take place. The vendor sent an instruction manual and promised shipping within two days. A representative for Telegram stated it regularly monitored dangerous content on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Cautions

“Individuals are injecting substances they can’t verify. Although the research behind retatrutide is sound, these online products may not contain what they advertise,” stated a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor connected the surge in interest to current cost increases for authorized slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are using social media. But counterfeit injections are extremely risky. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the environment they were made in was clean,” she said.

Her team has previously seen individuals injured by self-injection from unconfirmed suppliers. “We understand the disappointment, but purchasing from messaging apps or WhatsApp is taking chances with your well-being,” stated the doctor. “These substances could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”

Producer Statement

A spokesperson from Eli Lilly stated retatrutide was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been evaluated or authorized by any regulatory agency globally. “Therefore at this point no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any item “falsely representing itself as a Lilly investigational substance not yet authorized … may subject patients to possibly significant health risks”.
