"When are you interviewing the band?" an inquiry reads. "My request was to ask if I can become their fourth member."

There is only a single issue: The sender also wants to be the Haims' newest recruit. What's more, we are far from alone. A host of celebrated admirers have also begged for the position.

The evidence suggests a special quality is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their path doing sets at neighborhood delis with their family. Today, they are multiple Grammy nominees.

Like all the most iconic ensembles, they're a close unit. Their videos frequently feature them striding in sync down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such pure happiness you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a bass'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That's the ultimate honour. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage others to make music."

"And thus anyone gets an invitation to be the next Haim sister."

Award Nod

The band are connecting from home, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the first female band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the accolade isn't lost on the band.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major step," adds Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the pioneers that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The project was born from a period of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that odd transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The lyrics follow endings and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in the moment who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to actively work on shutting out the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Style

That newfound toughness called for a fresh approach – more organic and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drum sound.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Humor

The band's candor inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their dating misadventures.

A former partner ended things with Este over a medical concern. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Future

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an worldwide audience.

Yet the band will forever be their number one commitment.

"We have been playing music since I was four," says Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still making music."
