Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs created to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
